Lot Description
Nickel Remington New Model No. 2 Smoot .30RF Revolver
.30RF Short. 2.75" ribbed octagon barrel. SN: 258. Nickel finish, color casehardened hammer, blued trigger, checkered hard rubber grips. Single action solid frame spur trigger revolver with ejector rod, frame notch rear sight and blade front sight. Top of barrel rib marked in a single line: E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION, N.Y. PAT. W.S. SMOOT OCT. 21, 1873. About 3,000 of the New Model No. 2 Smoot revolvers were produced circa 1877-1885, in both .30RF short and .32RF short, with the belief that only about 600 were in the smaller .30RF chambering. Caliper measurements confirm this is a .30 caliber revolver with the bore measuring nominally .285" and the chamber mouths nominally .29" and with the rear of the chambers being nominally .295". A scarce and fairly early production Smoot variant, with the three digit serial number 258 stamped twice on the left side of the grip frame, under the grips. {ANTIQUE}
