Lot Description
Composite Harpers Ferry US Model 1816/22/28 Conversion Musket altered to Musketoon
American Civil War
.69 Caliber. 18.75" pinned smoothbore barrel. NSN. Bright finish, walnut stock. Smoothbore percussion altered muzzleloading military musket, altered to musketoon. Harpers Ferry marked lock dated 1838. Barrel tang with modern applied 1838 date. Breech with NWP/P inspection marks, indicating it is from a contract rather than arsenal made 1816/22/28 musket. Modifications include shortening the barrel, removing the barrel bands and securing the barrel with a pin, adding a front sight blade, adding a swivel ramrod, shortening the stock so the length of pull is now only 12", adding an 1855/1861 style buttplate instead of the original musket buttplate and replacing the sling swivel in the triggerguard. The assembly matching number "6" or "9" is stamped on the side plate and on both arms of the swivel ramrod. The exact purpose of the alteration is not clear, as the gun is now a sort of hybrid between a US M1847 Musketoon and a US M1855 Carbine. The modifications were likely performed in the 20th century rather than the 19th century. {ANTIQUE}
