Lot Description

Springfield Armory Model 1872 Cavalry Officers Saber
Indian Wars

33.75" blade length. 39.5" with hilt. 40.25" with scabbard and hilt. Curved single edge spearpoint blade with etched foliate patterns to the blade enclosing Panoplies of Arms, Spread Winged Eagles, and US initials. Left ricasso is etched with the maker marking U.S./ARMORY/Springfield/Mass. Hilt is composed of gilt brass with triple branch guard socketing into the Phrygian helmet pommel, and fastened by a peened tang. Interior guard cast with an {Eagle} above the grip and thirteen stars arrayed around the lower guard. Backstrap shows a US Army {Shield} seal above olive branches and a beaded ground. Comes with a nickel plated scabbard with double mounting rings and gilded brass fittings.
