US Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle Altered to a .40-65 Sporting Rifle
Indian Wars

.40-65. 30" octagonal barrel, .93" across the flats. SN: 12179 (mfg. ca. 1874). Blued finish, checkered sporterized stock with Schnabel forend and contrasting insert. Custom single shot sporting rifle built on an early production Trapdoor rifle action retaining the early production high-arch breech and two-click tumbler. Equipped with combination folding leaf and buckhorn rear sight and a dovetailed German silver blade front sight. Lock with no markings remaining. Breech block with early markings consisting of MODEL/1873/{Eagle Head}/{Crossed Arrows}/US. Barrel marked .40-65 on top near breech and serial numbered 12/179 underneath to match the action. Sporting stock with Winchester-style sliding trapdoor in buttplate for cleaning rod storage, which is not marked "US". A nicely altered early Trapdoor Rifle for sporting purposes. {ANTIQUE}
