Lot Description
US Model 1865 Springfield Joslyn Rifle
.50RF Joslyn. 35.5" barrel secured by three solid, spring retained barrel bands. SN: 273. Bright finish, casehardened breech block, iron furniture, full length walnut stock. Single shot breechloading metallic cartridge rifle with M1864 rear sight, combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels on the triggerguard bow and middle band and a jag head cleaning rod. Lock with {Spread-Winged Eagle} and U.S./SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer and dated 1864 horizontally at the tail. Breech block and tang with matching serial number and M sub-inspection, no patent markings on breech block. No visible cartouches. Only 3,007 of these rifles were produced at Springfield Armory circa 1865 with slightly more than half later altered to .50-70 centerfire. This example remains in its original rimfire configuration. These rifles were the first metallic cartridge breechloading long arms produced at the Springfield Arsenal. {ANTIQUE}
