Lot Description

Indian Wars Altered Civil War Period Spencer Model 1860 Carbine
Civil War / Indian Wars

.50RF. 22" barrel. SN: 14671. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock and forded secured by a screw and a single barrel band. Lever action, manually cocked repeating carbine with tubular magazine in butt, M1860 ladder rear sight, military musket pattern front sight, sling bar and ring opposite the lock and sling sling swivels on the barrel band and in the stock toe. Standard receiver markings mostly obliterated, clear script ECW cartouche of Elisha C Wheler to rear of sling bar on reverse wrist. Retains original factory 6-groove rifling and Civil War era magazine follower tube, with added Stabler magazine cut-off. A solid example of a Civil War era Spencer Carbine that was upgraded to see additional service during the Indian Wars. While this gun was not listed in the Springfield Research Service Serial Number books, most of the guns that are listed in the 14XXX range, and all in the 14,6XX range, were issued to the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War with the two guns closest to this one being #14630 and #14655, both issued to Co. E of the 7th PA. {ANTIQUE}
