Lot Description

Rare US Model 1869 Trowel Bayonet & Scabbard
Indian Wars

8.75" slightly concave spade shaped blade with prominent spine, nominally 4" wide at base. 3" socket with .78" muzzle diameter and 1.15" muzzle to stud distance. Overall length 12.825". Includes folding tompion and locking ring on socket. Left side of socket marked in three lines: E. R./PAT. JUNE 22,/1869. Includes correct pattern brass mounted leather scabbard with leather frog secured by stitching and seven rivets. It is unclear how many of these Edmund Rice designed combination entrenching tools and bayonets were produced at Springfield Arsenal, as the production was apparently grouped with the earlier 1868 variant that included a finger loop on the neck of the bayonet, but did not incorporate the folding tompion found on this version. Total production for both types is believed to be 706 with roughly 200 believed to be the 1868 version. A rare, early Indian Wars period bayonet that is not often found for sale, and complete with a correct original scabbard.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
