US Springfield Model 1828 (1816 Type III) Conversion Musket with Tinned Finish
American Civil War

.69 caliber. 42" barrel. NSN. Tinned finish, full length walnut musket stock with three flat spring-retained barrel bands. Single shot cone in barrel percussion altered muzzleloading smoothbore musket with brass blade front sight, sling swivels and a button head ramrod. Standard Springfield lock markings with date 1839 at tail, breech plug tang dated 1839 as well. Breech with typical V/{Eagle Head}/P inspection marks. Stock flat with crisp script ET (Elisha Tobey) cartouche. Tinned US muskets from the mid-19th are known, and are generally believed to have received these finishes experimentally for US Navy use to help protect the guns from the salt air. {ANTIQUE}
