Standard Springfield lock markings with date 1839 at tail, breech plug tang dated 1839 as well. Breech with typical V/{Eagle Head}/P inspection marks. Stock flat with crisp script ET (Elisha Tobey) cartouche. Tinned US muskets from the mid-19th are known, and are generally believed to have received these finishes experimentally for US Navy use to help protect the guns from the salt air. {ANTIQUE}
