Lot Description

English Brass Barrel Flintlock Coaching Carbine (Blunderbuss) Marked Joiner

.65 caliber (.95" at muzzle). 13.75" two-stage round pinned brass barrel with cannon muzzle. NSN. Brass barrel and furniture, bright steel lock, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock blunderbuss without sights, two ramrod pipes and wooden ramrod. 5.75" flat flint lock with integral rounded, fenced and bridled pan, frizzen with curled toe and flat faceted swan neck cock. Lock is marked JOINER. Lock remains in original flintlock configuration. Two sets of {CROWN/CROSSED SCEPTER} proofs are on the upper left breech, typically referred to as "Tower Private Proofs", commercially proof marked but not by the London proof house and prior to the establishment of the Birmingham proof house in 1813. "Joiner" was common spelling for the name "Joyner" during the period and it is likely that this was the product, or at least retailed by John Joyner a London based gunmaker working circa 1758-1774. Although several gunmakers named "Joyner" worked in London during the 17th and 18th century, only this one has working dates likely to coincide with this piece. No other potential "Joiner" was found in Birmingham, Ireland, Scotland or the Regions and no other potential "Joiner" was found in Stockel. An attractive mid-sized coaching carbine with an elegant form. From the Collection of Charles Worman, co-author of the two volume set Firearms of the American West. {ANTIQUE}
