Lot Description

[Contemporary Daguerreotype by Gomme]

"Greetings from Kusama Yoyoi" by Marc Gomme (Belgian, b. 1955). This is a masterful 8"x10" daguerreian still life of various fruits, dominanted by a large acorn squash.

In the past my subjects were to be found in the marginal sector of society (punks, gypsies, homeless people, prostitution, transsexuality, transvestism, minorities in Vietnam, Irian Jaya, Laos, Kurdistan, Syria and in the jungle of Borneo and Sarawak.

Over the years, through my studio work with large format cameras, my attention has grown to old, analog techniques and darkroom work. Currently, all my attention is focused on daguerreotype. After reading Latin texts and sayings in 2022, the idea for a series of still life "memento mori" was born.

This daguerreotype is part of a series "Greetings from ... " that started in 2024 and that I am still working on. Here I focus on artists who constantly fascinate me through their work or lifestyle.

Kusam Yoyoi (b. 1929) is a Japanese contemporary artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation, and is also active in painting, performance, video art, fashion, poetry, fiction, and other arts. She is especailly known for her colorful and fanciful sculptures of squash and pumpkins.
