Lot Description

[ Daguerreotype] A Gentleman in his Sporting Sulky

Vibrant sixth-plate outdoor daguerreotype of a stylish gentleman ready to race in his early sporting sulky.

According to Rebecca Howard from the Harness Racing Museum & Hall Of Fame, a sporting gentleman would commission a carriage maker or blacksmith to craft a lightweight sulky. Then with the fastest horse, he would roam the country lanes looking for "brushes" or impromptu races with other men. This gave rise to racing clubs and eventually sanctioned harness racing. This was featured in The Daguerreian Annual's 2002-2003 editon. It is housed in a full leather case.
