John Engstead's career began in Hollywood during the Silent Era, photographing such luminaries as Clara Bow and Louise Brooks. His use of outdoor settings for photo shoots set him apart from his contemporaries and this quickly became his signature style. In this photograph, taken for a feature on Frank Llloyd Wright for House Beautiful magazine at Wright's Taliesin West home in Scottsdale, Arizona, Engstead poses Wright against a background of shadows thrown by his own creation's unique architecture.
