Lot Description
[NATURAL HISTORY]. PRATT, Anne (1806-1893). Flowering Plants. Grasses, Sedges & Ferns of Great Britain. London: Frederick Warne & Co., 1899-1900.
3 volumes, 8vo. Numerous color plates and archive material loose, in original cloth; vol.I with dust jacket. Provenance: Frederick Warne, publisher (original parts of envelope mailer laid in with publisher's label and manuscript note of contents: "Mr. Britten revised MSS of Vol. I 1883 Reprint. Mrs. Pearless [née Pratt] report on plates + other MSS. corrections [indecipherable] 6 vol. edition").
PUBLISHER'S COPY, WITH AUTOGRAPH REVISIONS AND EMENDATIONS BY ANNE PRATT, EDWARD STEP, AND BOTANIST JAMES BRITTEN for the "Subscription Edition" of this work in parts published by A.W. Cowan and soon thereafter bound-up in 4-volumes by Warne. Frederick Warne sent this copy to the three botanists for their inclusion of edits for the updated publication, which would eventually be returned to the publisher with copious notes and correspondence. The archive of material included comprises: numerous plates with extensive manuscript notations by Step, autograph letters from both Pratt and Britten to the publisher explaining the corrections, a specimen sample used for the original 1882 publication, several mock-ups of the new publication's cover design for the parts, and Pratt's 48pp. manuscript notebook with her notes for each of the plates.
According to Edward Step, "All the coloured plates have been specially compared for this edition with the carefully hand-coloured originals; and the colour printing has been thereby improved."
Property from the Estate of Peter Fortsas
