Lot Description

[NATURAL HISTORY]. OWEN, Richard (1810-1890). Memoir on the Pearly Nautilus. London: Richard Taylor for W. Wood, 1832.


Small 4to. 8 stipple and roulette-work plates by Zeitter after Owen, plates 1-7 accompanied by line engraved key plates; albumen print portrait photograph of the author mounted to front blank verso. (Spotting or light browning.) Original drab cloth, printed spine label (front joint split and starting, covers unevenly sunned). Provenance: Bristol Museum and Art Gallery (bookplate and embossed stamp); advertisement tipped in.

FIRST EDITION of the author's first book, written when he was curator of the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons. Garrison-Morton 325; Nissen ZBI 3039.
