Lot Description
[NATURAL HISTORY]. MORRIS, Francis Orpen (1810-1893). A History of British Birds. [And:] A Natural History of the Nests and Eggs of British Birds. London: Groombridge and Sons, 1851-1857, 1853.
Together, 2 works in 9 volumes, tall 8vo. Both works comprise of 359 and 259 hand-colored engraved plates, respectively. Contemporary half calf, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, olive morocco lettering-pieces gilt in 2, others gilt, marbled edges (spines evenly sunned).
FIRST EDITIONS OF BOTH WORKS. According to Mullens and Swann (p.417), A Bibliography of British Ornithology, "early editions of this work are far superior in colouring", and that the plate numbers not present in this copy (no.11, 55, 56, 60, 69, 94 and 119) were never published.
