Lot Description
[NATURAL HISTORY]. JARDINE, William (1800-1874). The Natural History of Humming-Birds. Edinburgh: W.H. Lizars; S. Highley; and W. Curry, 1840.
2 volumes, 8vo (216 x 140 mm). Portrait frontispieces on india paper, additional engraved title-pages with hand-colored vignettes, 64 hand-colored engravings with scenic backgrounds, many heightened with gum arabic. (Some offsetting to the additional title-page in vol. I.) Modern morocco-backed cloth, top edges gilt.
RARE LARGE PAPER EDITION, with new title-pages, the text reset with the addition of double-ruled borders, the Memoirs of Linnaeus and Pennant considerably enlarged, the plates retouched and with added colored scenic backgrounds. "The great sale of these two Volumes, first published in the Naturalist's Library, and now presented to the Public in a new form, together with the beauty and interest of the objects which illustrate and adorn them, it is hoped will be deemed sufficient warrant for bringing them out upon a more expensive scale than that in which they had previously appeared" (from an advertisement by the publisher). Zimmer, p. 329.
