Lot Description
[NATURAL HISTORY]. HIBBERD, James Shirley (1825-1890), editor. Floral World and Garden Guide. London: Groombridge, 1858-1867, 1869-1875, 1877-1880.
12 volumes, 8vo (210 x 130 mm). Numerous hand-colored chromolithographic plates (dampstaining, toning, very light spotting throughout.) Contemporary half morocco, one volume in green cloth (rubbing to spines, some partial splits to hinges).
FIRST EDITIONS. Work on The Floral World and Garden Guide began shortly after the publication of Hibberd's Rustic Adornments for Homes of Taste in 1856, and quickly proved its editor to be one of the foremost authorities on amateur gardening. The monthly periodical featured reader correspondence and invaluable tips from Hibberd himself as well as other amateur gardeners for growing plants within urban spaces.
