4to (286 x 222 mm). 106 hand-colored plates (spotting throughout, offsetting). Contemporary quarter morocco (rubbing, splits along hinges).
The Universal Herbal was compiled by Thomas Green from various sources for use "whether as food, as medicine, or in the arts and manufactures— adapted for the use of the farmer, the gardener, the husband-man, the botanist, the florist, and country house-keepers." Many of the plates were painted from life by renowned botanical artists Georg Dionysius Ehret and Maria Sybilla Merian while others were copied from earlier works and were then engraved by printers Dixon, Dobie, Swift, and others.
