Lot Description
[AMERICANA]. CATLIN, George (1796-1872). North American Indians, Being Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Conditions... Edinburgh: John Grant, 1926.
2 volumes, 8vo. Half-titles, title-pages printed in red and black, 320 illustrations (mostly printed in color) on 180 plates after Catlin's original paintings, including frontispieces and one folding map. Original red pictorial cloth stamped in black and gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (spines very slightly faded, light wear at extreme ends and fore-corners, hinges slightly tender, a few scuffs to rear boards). Provenance: Chas. E Lauriat (booksellers' ticket); later gift inscription.
Later edition of Catlin's work, first published in 1841 and reprinted many times, which served as "the basis for much Plains ethnology.... Today [Catlin's] work is criticized for its unrelenting Romanticism, but it is treasured by historians and anthropologists alike, who value his attention to details and brave dedication to his task" (Tyler, Prints of the American West, pp.46-55). See Howes C-241.
