Lot Description
COMBE, William (1742-1823). The English Dance of Death. London: J. Diggens; R. Ackermann’s Repository of Arts 1815-1816.
2 volumes, 8vo. Hand-colored aquatint frontispiece and title in vol.1, 72 hand-colored aquatint plates after Rowlandson. (A few marginal repairs to advertisement leaf and a plate in vol.1, offsetting to text from plates.) Later burgundy morocco gilt, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, top edges gilt, others uncut, stamp-signed by Zaehnsdorf, EXHIBITION BINDING WITH THEIR GILT-STAMP on rear pastedown (very light rubbing, light offsetting to endpapers). Provenance: Armorial bookplate on the front free endpaper of each volume.
FIRST EDITION. The English Dance of Death was originally issued in 24 monthly parts, having been born from the success of Rowlandson and Combe's previous collaboration, The Tour of Dr Syntax. Abbey Life, 263; Tooley 411; Prideaux, pp.306-307; Ray 35; Martin Hardie, pp.171-172.
