[BINDING]. HUMPHREYS, Henry Noel (1807-1879). The Illuminated Books of the Middle Ages. An Account of the Development and Progress of the Art of Illumination, as a Distinct Branch of Pictorial Ornamentation, from the IVth to the XVIIth Centuries. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1849.
Large folio. Additional chromolithographed title, 39 mounted chromolithographed plates and one uncolored plate by Owen Jones. (A few plate leaves tape repaired at gutter, spotting throughout.) Contemporary half red morocco, spine in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands, gilt-lettering in one, others ornately tooled, all edges gilt, stamp-signed by Riviere (rebacked preserving original spine). Provenance: Westminster Public Library (bookplate).
