Lot Description
[BINDING - VICTORIAN]. HUMPHREYS, Henry Noel (1810-1879). Ancient Coins and Medals. London: Grant & Griffith, 1850.
4to. 114 facsimile coins in gold, silver and bronze reproduced in relief by the Barclay process and mounted in sunken mounts in 10 thick card leaves. Original repousse binding with title in central roundel on both covers (rebacked and recased with original covers laid down); folding case. Provenance: Anthony David Estill (book label).
FIRST EDITION of this numismatic sample book on ancient Greek & Roman coins by the influential British illustrator, and noted numismatist. Humphreys proclaims in his introduction how he has invented a new process to recreate actual facsimile coins in their original metals, as he had found no other printing or reprographic process properly conveyed either the weight or appearance of the coins, quite separate from the chromolithograph color printing process for his very successful Coins of England.
Property from the Estate of Peter Fortsas
