Lot Description
[BINDING - VICTORIAN]. GRUNER, Ludwig (1801-1882) and JONES, Owen (1809-1874), designers. The Good Shunammite. London: Longman, Brown, Green, & Longman, 1847.
8vo (161 x 114 mm). 20 chromolithographic illuminated leaves. (Very light marginal toning.) Original morocco-backed papier-mâché boards, all edges gilt (very light cracking, evidence of restoration at upper cover fore-corner); modern slipcase. Provenance: Robin de Beaumont (1926-2023), book collector and former president of the Private Libraries Association (bookplate).
Owen Jones was a British architect and designer whose work was inspired in large part by his studies of Islamic design. He is credited with developing innovative new bookbinding techniques that incorporated the use of non-traditional materials such as papier-mâché, embossed leather, and terracotta. McLean, Victorian Books, p.92.
