Lot Description

[ARCHITECTURE]. FALDA, Giovanni Battista (1648-1678). Le fontane di Roma nelle piazze e luoghi pubblici della citta. Rome: Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, n.d. [ca 1691].

4 parts in one volume, oblong 4to (254 x 356 mm). 4 engraved title-pages, 4 engraved dedications, and 99 etchings, of which 3 are folding, all engraved by Falda and Venturini. (Marginal toning and spotting, some corners brittle, later ink notation on first title-page.) Modern cloth, new endpapers. Provenance: two unidentifiable contemporary bookplates; contemporary manuscript notations in English at the foot of several plates in part 1.

Later edition, with plate numbers, first published ca 1675-1685. "This collection of plates is the most charming that has ever appeared on the fountains of Rome and its environs...all copies examined vary in numbering and arrangement of plates" (Fowler). The early impressions do not have the plate numbering which appeared later, perhaps with this edition, around 1691 (Berlin Kat.). BL, 17th century Italian books, p.327; Bruni and Evans, 4361; Cicognara 3863 (part I-III only); Fowler, pp. 97-99; RIBA 1014 (first edition); Berlin Kat. 3603-4.
