8vo. Chromolithographic frontispiece tipped-in, 3 color-printed folding maps, and 20 plates (8 photographic, 12 photogravure). Contemporary half brown morocco gilt, marbled boards, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettering in 2, others twice framed gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, stamp-signed by Morrell (a few light spots of rubbing). Provenance: armorial bookplate on pastedown.
FIRST TRADE EDITION in English, describing Meyer's journeys to the mountain in 1887, 1888, and 1889, when he made the first undisputed ascent by a European of Kibo Peak (or Uhuru), Kilimanjaro's principal summit at 19,340 ft. This work is only one of two climbing accounts Meyer published in English. Neate M92; Perret 2987.
