Lot Description
[TRAVEL & EXPLORATION]. CHARDIN, Jean (1643-1713). Voyages de Monsieur le chevalier Chardin, en Perse, et autres lieux de l'Orient. Amsterdam: Jean Louis de Lorme, 1711.
3 volumes, small 4to. Titles printed in red and black with engraved vignette; engraved frontispiece in vol.1, 79 engraved plates and maps (most folding). Modern calf antique. Provenance: Henry Field (1841-1890), American businessman and philanthropist (bookplates).
The most complete edition of Chardin’s Voyages, covering all his travels. According to Howgego, "the earliest editions of Chardin's travels curiously contain nothing on his journey to India. Chardin apparently refused to include his Indian travels as a consequence of his imperfect understanding of Indian religion and culture. The first edition to include his Indian travels was published in Amsterdam in 1711." Atabey 219; Brunet, I, 1802; Chadenat 35; Cox I, p.250; Howgego C102.
