[British Isles] Woodward, G(eorge).M(outard). Eccentric Excursions or, Literary & Pictorial Sketches of Countenance, Character & Country in different parts of England & South Wales...
London: Published by Allen & Co., (ca. 1814). Later issue. 4to. (ii), iv, (iii)-iv, v-217, (1) pp. (text leaves variously watermarked 1794, 1799, and 1806); Contents leaf (A2) bound after B2. Illustrated with a hand-colored engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, and 99 hand-colored engraved plates (three folding), by Isaac Cruikshank after Woodward (frontispiece dated 1807, but plates variously watermarked Willmoth and dated 1808-10). Full contemporary English crimson straight grain morocco, elaborately stamped in blind and in gilt, joints lightly worn, boards lightly worn, spine slightly darkened; all edges gilt; gilt morocco book-plate of Valentine Hollingsworth on front paste-down; contemporary ownership signature on front free endpaper (E.G. Ashby); small abrasion at bottom of title-page from when printed year rubbed out; scattered soiling to text, light offsetting from plates onto same; wear along folds of folding plates.
First published in 1796, with subsequent issues appearing in 1797, 1798, 1799, 1801, 1807, 1814, 1815, 1816, and 1818. With 100 splendid plates by Isaac Cruikshank, father of George Cruikshank. Isaac's plates, "always vigorous and colorful, they range from carefully etched and colored details to mere scrawls of the unimportant parts, with colors perhaps not fitting the lines of the plate."
