Lot Description

[Art] [Ernst, Max] Prevert, Jacques. Les Chiens Ont Soif


Paris: Au Pont Des Arts, (1964). First and limited edition, one of only 20 "Exemplaires de Collaborateurs", lettered "h.c.n." (from a total edition of 320). Presentation copy, boldly inscribed by the author on copyright page to the publication's printer Louis Barnier, and with an original drawing by Prevert of a dog toasting a glass of wine: "a la / sante / de Louis Barnier / Jacques Prevert". Illustrated with two full-page color etchings signed by Max Ernst, a lithographed design on title-page, as well as 16 full- and/or double-page color lithographs. Text, lithographs, and etchings loose as issued, in original lithographed wrappers; in original grey buckram fall-down-back box. A fine presentation copy of this evocative collaboration between French poet and screenwriter Jacques Prevert and surrealist artist Max Ernst. One of only 20 copies produced specially for those involved in the work's creation, and inscribed by Prevert for French printer and director of the L'Imprimerie Union, Louis Barnier. For this production, the L'Imprimerie Union provided the Garamont and Gill typography, and are credited on the colophon at the rear.
