Lot Description
[Art] Ernst, Max. Une Semaine de Bonté ...
Paris: Aux Editions Jeanne Bucher, 1934. In five volumes. First edition, each #385/800 numbered copies on Navarre paper (from a total edition of 816). 4to. Profusely illustrated by Ernst. Original multi-colored stiff printed wrappers, very lightly worn; all edges trimmed; front hinge of final volume starting, small pasted label on limitation of same; in original paper-board slip case, original printed green cover label and printed spine label, box worn with sello tape repairs.
Scarce and complete first edition set of Max Ernst's influential and most ambitious surrealist collage novel, Une Semaine de bonté (A Week of Kindness). Divided into seven parts, one for each day of the week, each illustrates one of Ernst's seven deadly elements ("Oedipus," "The Court of the Dragon," etc.). In total, the work features over 180 images created from cut-up and rearranged 19th century novels, scientific journals, encyclopedias, and other sources, creating a dark and humoristic dreamscape.
