Rare first edition presentation copy of these two lectures, inscribed by Heisenberg to German-born Jewish American physician and writer, Martin Gumpert (1897-1955). Born in Berlin, during his youth Gumpert published works inspired by expressionism, and following the completion of his studies, published works on medicine. In 1933, with the rise of the Nazis, he was dismissed from his post as head doctor at the Moabit Hospital, and three years later emigrated to the United States. In New York he opened his own surgery and was one of the first doctors there to specialize in geriatrics. A friend of Thomas Mann, he helped the latter during his completion of Doctor Faustus.
