Lot Description

[Maps & Atlases] Blaeu, Willem. Americae nova Tabula

(Amsterdam: ca. 1631). Third state. Partially hand-colored engraved map of North and South America, from Blaeu's Atlas Appendix. Approximately 16 3/4 x 22 1/2 in. (425 x 571 mm) (sight). Creasing from old folds; scattered foxing; unevenly toned. In mat and unexamined out of frame, 23 1/4 x 29 in. (590 x 737 mm). Burden 189; Tooley, p. 297

Strong impression of Dutch cartographer Willem Blaeu's map of the Americas. The sides are bordered with depictions of the native peoples of the New World, as well as plans of the towns of Havana, St. Domingo, Cartegena, Mexico City, Cusco, Potosi, Mocha Island in Chile, Rio de Janeiro, and Olinda in Brazil.

This third state incorporated recent discoveries by Henry Hudson in modern day northeastern United States, as well as showing the Tierra del Fuego as a separate island off of the southern tip of South America.

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
