(iv), xxviii, 403; viii, 466, 1 (errata) pp. Translated from the original Spanish by Smollett. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece in first volume, and 27 engraved plates by G. Scotin after F(rancis). Hayman. Full contemporary speckled tan calf, red and green morocco spine labels, decorated in gilt, light wear to boards, chipping to spine ends of each volume; red speckled edges; armorial book-plate of Thomas Wharton on front paste-down of each volume; light offsetting from plates; scattered minor spotting to text; Xx1-4 bound out of order, following Tt4. A very handsome copy of Tobias Smollett's celebrated English translation of Don Quixote, featuring Francis Hayman's fine engravings, his best work. Smollett's translation is the fifth English-language translation, and is preceded by Thomas Shelton's (1612 and 1620), John Phillips' (1687), Peter Motteux's (1700-03), and Charles Jervas' (1742) editions.
