Lot Description
[Games] Deck of Proverb Playing Cards
(London, ca. 1720). Comprising 50 (of 52) engraved playing cards, each with large illustration and two line proverb in bottom edge (in English and in French), suit mark in top right corner (appropriate suits hand-colored colored in red); ace of spades with red ink tax stamp; plain backs. Scattered soiling; very small wormhole at center of most cards; small loss in bottom corner of seven of spades and ace of diamonds; small tear in top corner of nine of spades. Six of spades and six of hearts wanting. Each about 3 11/16 x 2 7/16 in. (94 x 62 mm). Hargrave, p. 202
