The "Extinction of the Slave Trade" was the primary objective of the Niger Expedition of 1841, in the hope of obtaining more accurate knowledge of the conditions of those countries bordering the Niger, and of eliciting the help of local native chiefs. The expedition failed when the three ships were forced to return to the coast after outbreaks of malaria, and the expedition was recalled completely in 1842.
