Lot Description

BROWN, Robert Neal Rudmose (1879-1957); MOSSMAN, Robert Cockburn (1870-1940); and PIRIE, James Hunter Harvey (1878-1965). The Voyage of

8vo. With large folding map, 2 further maps (1 folding and in color), and 59 photographic plates. (Pale foxing.) Original publisher's grey cloth (corners slightly bumped). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the Expedition leader, William S. Bruce on the half-title: "With compliments Wm. S. Bruce 11.11.18." This work is the primary narrative account of the 'Scotia' and the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition of 1902-04, planned and led by Bruce. He had declined the opportunity of accompanying Scott's Discovery expedition as a naturalist, and instead embarked upon this Scottish-financed voyage to the Weddell Sea. As Taurus notes, the underfunded expedition became frozen over the winter, but nonetheless Bruce discovered Coats Land, and undertook the first thorough study of penguins. Rosove 50; Spence 193; Taurus Collection 51. A very fine copy.
