8vo. With 2 folding maps, 47 illustrations on 43 leaves, folding panorama (split along folds). Contemporary half morocco by Stikeman and Co. (rebacked preserving original spine). FIRST EDITION. Bernacchi, the first Australian to set foot on the Antarctic continent, relates the first deliberate wintering in Antarctica on the Southern Cross expedition of 1898-1900 (see next lot). "Bernacchi's account is a gem in the Antarctic literature To him we are indebted for many beautiful literary images of the voyage. Bernacchi was only twenty-six at the time of publication but had an unmistakable writing ability, amply confirmed in his subsequent literary output; the work is attractively illustrated with photographs taken by the author" (Rosove).
