GRAY, William, Major. Travels in Western Africa, in the years 1818, 19, 20, and 21, from the River Gambia, through Woolli, Bondoo, Galam, Kasson, Kaarta, and Foolidoo, to the River Niger. London: John Murray, 1825. 8vo (218 x 133 mm). Half-title. Engraved folding map, 14 aquatint and lithographed plates (including frontispiece, 10 aquatint and 4 lithographs). Contemporary speckled calf gilt, smooth spine gilt with gilt cypher in upper compartment (rebacked preserving original spine). Provenance: Unidentified gilt cipher in uppr compartment on spine. FIRST EDITION of Gray's expedition from Tripoli, one of three sponsored by the Admiralty after Mungo Park's second (and last) expedition of 1805 to the Niger River (see lot 148).
