4to (285 x 190 mm). 34 photogravure plates, 4 folding panoramas, 2 color-printed folding maps, numerous half-tone illustrations in text. Publisher's tan cloth, original spine label, original cloth ties (text block and spine cracked down center with backstrip reinforced, printed label rubbed, ties frayed). Provenance: Stewart Paton (1865-1942), American psychiatrist (presentation inscription from Filippi). FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, one of 100 copies on hand-made paper. PRESENTATION COPY, with an autograph letter signed from the author to Stewart Paton presenting this copy "as a sign of kind remembrance", May 1900, 1 page, 8vo. Also with an autograph note in Italian to the author from Luigi di Amedeo on personal note card, undated; and a postcard in Italian from the photographer Vittoria Sella to the author, postmarked Biella, Novara, 1 February 1900.
