Lot Description

DCHY, Moriz von. Kaukasus. Reisen und Forschungen im kaukasischen Hochgebirge. Berlin: Dietrich Reimer, 1905-1907. 3 volumes, 4to (286 x 210 mm). 38 photogravure plates, 18 half-tone folding panoramas, 2 color-printed folding maps, numerous in-text illustrations. Original half cloth, original leather labels (labels faded).FIRST EDITION by the notable Hungarian alpinist who made three expeditions to the Caucasus from 1884 to 1897. He climbed extensively in the little-known Adai-Khokh Range of the Eastern Caucasus. The entire range is the geographical boundary between Europe and Asia, running 500 miles from the Baltic to the Caspian Sea with only four major passes across it, all heavily glaciated on the heights ranging from 14,000 ft. to Kazbek at 16,500 ft. and Elbruz at 18,500 ft. Dchy's remarkable photographs of these peaks, passes and glaciers, his mountain panoramas and the full extent of the narrative were an expensive publishing project and were never reprinted. The narrative is contained in the first two volumes; the third volume comprises the Natural History Reports by Dchy and other expedition members. Alpine Club Library, p. 84; not in Perret.
