8vo (190 x 115 mm). 2 engraved folding maps, engraved folding panorama, 17 engraved plates. Contemporary panelled calf (front hinge expertly repaired). Provenance: William Evetts (Trinity College, Oxford, signature dated 1731); unidentified early inscription.FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. It is on this account of Selkirk's years on Juan Fernandez Island that Defoe drew for his 1719 adventure novel. Cooke commanded one of the ships in Captain Woodes Rogers's circumnavigation (see lot 161). This buccaneering account includes a description of California, with a plate showing a native of the region. Published as a single volume with a continuation published later the same year.
