Early 20th-century half crimson morocco, marbled boards, by Mudie.FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, HENRY M. STANLEY'S COPY of the narrative of the French explorer's travels to reach Timbuktu. On his return to France, Caillie became the first European to return alive from Timbuktu, and was awarded the prize of 10,000 francs by the Socit de Gographie. Assisted by the scholar Edme-Franois Jomard, he published an account of his journey in French earlier the same year. In 1830 he was awarded the Gold Medal by the Socit de Gographie.
