John Bulkeley and John Cummins, Late Gunner and Carpenter of the Wager. London: for Jacob Robinson, 1743.

FIRST EDITION, without the authors' names included in the title (another edition of 1743 was issued with the title including their names). The authors were respectively gunner and carpenter of the Wager, a ship of George Anson's fleet which rounded Cape Horn and ran aground on 14 May 1741 in the Guayaneco Archipelago on the southern coast of Chile. After the loss of the Wager, Bulkeley and Cummins organized the mutiny against Captain Cheap. This narrative describes how the mutineers made their way back through the hazardous navigation of the Straits of Magellan in a surviving longboat, named Speedwell, to eventually reach Rio de Janeiro. Sabin and Hill refer to two 1743 editions of Bulkeley's narrative though ESTC lists only the one above. Borba de Moraes I, 133; ESTC T142350; Hill 210; Howgego B-186; Sabin 9108.
