SUTHERLAND, Peter Cormack (1822-1920). Journal of a Voyage in Baffin's Bay and Barrow Straits, in the years 1850-1851, performed in H.M. Ships 'Lady Franklin' and 'Sophia,' under the command of Mr. William Penny, in search of the Missing Crews of H.M. Ships Erebus and Terror. London: Longman, Brown, et al, 1852.
2 volumes, 8vo (196 x 120 mm). 2 chromolithographed folding maps (one with tape repairs on verso with associated stain showing through), 6 plates (4 printed in color); 2 pp. publisher's advertisements at the back of vol. 1 dated June 12, 1852. . Publisher's ochre cloth decorated in gilt and blind (a few small stains and repairs to spines). FIRST EDITION. In 1850, fourteen ships were searching the Arctic for Sir John Franklin's missing crew and ships; earlier that year, the Admiralty had offered a prize of 20,000 for Franklin's rescue, 10,000 for finding his ships and the same amount for the first crossing of the North-West Passage. Penny was commander of the Lady Franklin and the Sophia, and the latter was captained by Alexander Stewart with Sutherland as surgeon to the expedition. The officers and majority of the crew were experienced Arctic whalers or sailors, and Sutherland served on two previous whaling voyages with Penny. Arctic Bibliography17231; Sabin 93963.
