Lot Description
PAGES, Pierre Marie Francois, Vicomte de (1748-1793). Voyages autour du Monde et vers les deux Poles, par terre et par mer, pendant les annes 1767... 1776. Paris: Chez Moutard, 1782.
2 volumes, 8vo (194 x 122 mm). 7 engraved folding maps, 3 engraved folding plates. Contemporary French cat's-paw calf gilt, spines gilt, red and green morocco lettering-pieces gilt (discreet repairs to hinges and spine). Provenance: l'Abbe de la Cour (bookplate).FIRST EDITION of Pages' original account of his numerous voyages. In 1767, he explored the Louisiana Territory, traveling up the Mississippi and traversing Texas and Mexico by horse. He sailed with Kerguelen-Tremarac's unsuccessful second voyage in search of Terra Australis Incognita in 1773, and in 1776 he joined a Dutch whaling expedition.
