Lot Description
LYON, George Francis (1795-1832). A Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa, in the years 1818, 19, and 20. London: John Murray, 1821.
4to (268 x 211 mm). Engraved folding map (old small paper repair at gutter), 17 hand-colored lithographed plates after Lyon, by M. Gauci, G. Harley or D. Dighton. (Minor offsetting from map onto title-page, minor pale spotting.) Early 20th-century half brown pebble-grain morocco gilt.FIRST EDITION of Lyon's description of an expedition to Tripoli and Mouzouk, "an important work" (Blackmer). Lyon was the only survivor of the three-man Niger expedition sponsored by the Admiralty and under the aegis of Sir John Barrow to determine the course of the Niger.
