Near-contemporary half calf, specked boards, smooth spine gilt, red calf lettering-piece gilt (upper joint splitting, some minor wear). FIRST EDITION describing Kergulen-Trmarec's expedition to the North Sea, during which he explored the coasts of Iceland, Greenland, and Norway. He led Naval expeditions in 1771 and 1773 to search for the fabled Terra Australis, but he was court-martialled and imprisoned for failing to carry out his sailing instructions on the second voyage; as a result, the account of the 1773 voyage was supressed and not published until 1782.
