Lot Description

Engraved folding map, 12 engraved charts and coastal profiles (7 folding), 4 engraved plates, all by Eisen. (Minor dampstaining to upper margin mostly on index leaves and at end.) Near-contemporary half calf, specked boards, smooth spine gilt, red calf lettering-piece gilt (upper joint splitting, some minor wear). FIRST EDITION describing Kergulen-Trmarec's expedition to the North Sea, during which he explored the coasts of Iceland, Greenland, and Norway. He led Naval expeditions in 1771 and 1773 to search for the fabled Terra Australis, but he was court-martialled and imprisoned for failing to carry out his sailing instructions on the second voyage; as a result, the account of the 1773 voyage was supressed and not published until 1782. Vicomte de Pags sailed with him on that voyage and published his own account in 1782 (see lot 147). Cox II p.21; Sabin 37616.
