BARROW, John (1764-1848). An Account of Travels into the Interior of South Africa, in the years 1797 and 1798. London: A. Strahan for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1801, 1804. 2 volumes, 4to (266 x 204 mm). Engraved folding map hand-colored in outline, folding aquatint frontispiece, 8 engraved folding maps & coastal profiles (2 with hand-coloring). (Lacking half-title to vol. I, some offsetting and spotting to text and plates.) Contemporary polished calf, marbled edges (rebacked preserving original spines). Provenance: Grantham (armorial bookplate and shelf labels). FIRST EDITION of Barrow's important account written from observations made while on the staff of Lord Macartney during the first British occupation. Barrow gives a good description of the country as seen on several journeys to Graaf-Reinet, Namaqualand and Algoa Bay, together with opinions of the inhabitants. Abbey Travel 320; Gay 2996.
