Lot Description
TOCQUEVILLE, Alexis de (1805-1809). Autograph letter signed ("Alexis de Tocqueville"), in French, to Mr. Julius. 8 May 1836.
1 page, 8vo, bifolium, addressed with an additional note on verso, clean tear along center fold, torn under address with tape repair verso, upper corner torn, creased. Tocqueville sends his regrets for missing an engagement on Friday and invites the recipient to lunch with he and Mr. Beaumont at 10 o'clock. Comte Gustave Auguste Bonnin de la Bonninire de Beaumont traveled with Tocqueville to America on a commission from King Louis-Phillipe to inspect American prison systems. They published Du systme pnitentiare aux Etats-Unis on their return; the work was later translated into German by Dr. Julius (the recipient of this letter).
