Lot Description
TACITUS, Publius Cornelius (ca 55-102). Opera. Leiden: Elzevir, 1640.
2 volumes, 12mo (128 x 72 mm). Engraved title to vol. I, engraved portrait of Tiberius Caesar, folding letterpress table, woodcut device on title to vol. II, woodcut headpieces and initials. (Table trimmed just shaving a few letters, Contemporary vellum gilt, smooth spine gilt-lettered on a blue wash background, gilt-numbered and gilt lettered at foot, gilt stag tooling, turn-ins gilt on a green wash background, edges gilt. Provenance: D.R. (early signature); R.W. Hay (stamp); James Roberton LLD (1821-1889) Scottish lawyer (bookplate); W.P. Dudley (noting a gift from A.G. Carey). "Of these elegant little editions [of Tacitus] that of 1640 is preferred on account of its having the notes of Grotius. It is one of the earliest Elzevir classics and a fine copy is very valuable" (Dibdin Classics vol.II, p.452).
