Lot Description
PLUTARCH (ca 46-ca120). Plutarch's Lives, in Eight Volumes: Translated from the Greek...to which is prefixed The Life of Plutarch, Written by Dryden. London: for J. and F. Rivington and others, 1770-1771.
8 volumes, 8vo (177 x 107 mm). Engraved frontispiece by J. Miller after J. Thornhill in vol. I, engraved headpiece portraits. (Some light spotting.) Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, maroon and green lettering-pieces gilt in two, the rest gilt-decorated (some light overall wear, joints starting, lacking lettering-pieces to vol.I). Dryden oversaw a team of editors, including Thomas Creech, Paul Rycaut, and Richard Duke to translate Plutarch's Lives from the original Greek. The translation was first published in 1680, and remained the standard for nearly a century, until a new translation was completed by the Langhorne brothers. RARE: ESTC locates only 13 copies.
